2024 Makeup Trends

With 2024 being just a few short weeks away and Christmas approaching fast, we wanted to take a look at what makeup looks are set to dominate the first half of 2024. There are some amazing trends out there on the catwalk, on social and already out there.

So what are the big makeup trends 2024 has in store for us?

Graphic or Floating Eyeliner

This is where eyeliner goes big and becomes the big focus of your look, drawing lots of attention to the eyes. Some makeup artists have used it all the way around the eye to create wing effects that really stand out. Others have sported thick lines next to the eye or drawn lines that don’t quite meet, using the negative space to draw attention or become a focal point. 

This is a bold, stand out and look straight from the high-fashion playbook. If you’re going to play with this look, you need to go big and commit - your eyes are going to be a big focus of your look. 

Coloured Eyeliner

Whilst we’re on eyeliner, another trend that goes hand in hand with graphic eyeliner is coloured eyeliner. This is all about using big, bold strokes of eyeliner to, again, make the eyes a big feature and bring attention to them. 

Try matching your eyeliner to your clothing or choose a complementary colour. Some designers have used eyeshadow rather than liner to create bold and colourful looks. Don’t forget that to perfect your eyeliner, you need a liner brush.

Others have started playing with asymmetrical eye shadow where the placement of makeup on one side of the face isn’t mirrored on the other. This is definitely a look to try out at home and practise carefully so you can feel confident in the look.

Skin First

Perhaps a bit less radical and high concept than the eyeliner trends we’ve covered above but no less beautiful, skin first is all about prioritising having really healthy looking, glowing skin. Mermaidcore

All things mermaid are having a bit of a moment and mermaid inspired makeup looks are set to take 2024 by storm. 

One of the bolder takes on the trend is to place rhinestones around eyes, almost at random to give the feel of sea creatures resting on the skin. This is another way of drawing attention to the eyes and perfecting a look in a fun and colourful way. Aquatic inspired colour palettes filled with greens, blues and purple also work really well with this look.

ANother way to embrace mermaidcore that might be more suited to a typical day at the office or a night out where you don’t want to adopt a really pronounced look is to make the skin look super hydrated and shiny, which gives a beautiful radiant finish.

The Return Of Glam

For a little while now minimal makeup has been a trend. We’ve written about several of these minimalist looks before and they’ll definitely be around for a while but some designers are turning back towards fuller, bigger, more glam looks. 

Think bold reds on lips, big eyelashes and lots of eyeshadow brought together to create a stand out look that isn’t shy. This is a look which needs a good set of makeup brushes to correctly apply and blend all of the different elements together but when it all comes together the look is amazing. 

Of course, looks are always evolving and new ideas are developing so we’re sure there’ll be lots of other exciting makeup trends emerging in 2024, but to start us off, these are really exciting!
