Beach Makeup: Your Summer Guide

Beach Makeup: Your Summer Guide

If there’s one place you want to feel positive and confident, it’s the beach. Beach makeup is great for keeping you looking and feeling fresh in the sun, but you need to bear in mind that sun, sea and sand can make some looks tricky. Don’t worry though, because our helpful tips are all about making you look and feel great whether sunbathing, playing volleyball or taking a swim.

Sunscreen, Sunscreen, Sunscreen

When it comes to being in the sun all day long, sunscreen is a must. Whilst SPF products are great, they’re no substitute for the real thing, especially when you’re going to be in the sun all day. We know applying it can be tricky but think about this, over 80% of aging comes from sun exposure and that’s to say nothing of actually getting sunburn. Nothing undermines your carefully crafted look like red, flaky burnt skin, not to mention of course that it’s really painful. To make sure that you're protected all day you need to reapply sunscreen every 90 minutes to two hours and straight away if you’ve been for a swim.

Waterproofing

If you’re going to go for a swim in either the sea or a pool then of course you’ll need waterproof makeup. This is especially important around the eyes where if you don’t opt for a waterproof mascara then you can find yourself looking like a panda. Waterproof makeup has some other advantages as well. Because waterproof foundation tends to be a little darker than standard foundation, you only need to apply it sparingly and it can be used to give a nice, sunkissed look; ideal if you’ve just arrived and haven’t had time to build your tan up yet.

Work With The Sun

The sun will naturally tan certain parts of your face, with the areas that catch the sun more, coloring faster. Help this process along by applying a cream that illuminates or bronzes to your upper cheekbones, your forehead, your chin and the bridge of your nose.

Choose Liquid

Powder based makeup isn’t a great idea when it comes to the beach. When you get warm your pores open up which means makeup can get stuck in them and they can also look cakey. Stick with liquid based makeup, creams and gels they won’t clog but can be easily reapplied.

Lip Balm Not Lip Gloss

Lip gloss tends to turn sticky and run if sand gets near it or if it gets wet, which isn't ideal for the beach look you're after. Lip balms generally do better plus they often contain SPF, come in a nice range of colors which can be toned with a swimsuit or sarong and because they’re often scented also can smell great too!

Blotting Paper

Some makeup artists suggest only taking blotting paper with you to the beach. This means that whatever fades will stay faded but the beach really isn’t the place to be applying lots of makeup. Whether you choose to follow this advice or not, we heartily recommend blotting paper, which is super useful if you start to sweat or your makeup clumps.

Remember, the beach is all about having fun and enjoying the sunshine and the outdoors. If you go with a heavy makeup look, you won’t be able to maintain it and can run the risk of damaging your skin. And always be sure to sunscreen, sunscreen sunscreen!
